Volunteer
Would you like to get involved? Don’t be shy! We are a diverse group of individuals – old and young - families, long-time locals, seasonal residents and new arrivals.
We are part of an Australia-wide Coastcare network that cares passionately about the protection and management of our coastal and marine environments. We have wonderful support from Huon Valley Council and its nursery, and Traditional Owners to take care of the coastal strip from Deep Bay to Eggs and Bacon Bay.
We meet the last Saturday of each month (except December and January) to work on a particular project or location – clearing persistent weeds like blackberry and gorse, learning how to use fire as a useful tool, replanting with locally-grown species, or monitoring seagrass in the marine zone.
Look out for the blackboards along Abels Bay Road to find out when and where to find us.
Activities are always followed by sumptuous feeds of cake, cookies, slices with a hot cup of tea or coffee – and sometimes a barbecue or picnic!
Just bring yourself (plus water, sun and wind protection, maybe some simple tools).
Follow your passion to learn more about your local area:
vegetation and its threats
native seed collection and plant propagation
effective weed control
marine creatures
seagrass ecology
Indigenous cultural burning
bushfire management
